A temporomandibular joint, also called a TMJ, is a complex ball and socket joint within your jaw that acts to move your mouth in its multitude of angles and directions. Thanks to our TMJs on each side of our jaws, we can fully open and close out mouths, speak efficiently, and properly chew food for maximum effectiveness for digestion. Unfortunately, due to the complex nature of the joints, they can wear down over time or be easily damaged, leading to TMJ disorders. Listed below are a few problems and issues concerning TMJs and how to protect them against TMJ disorders:

– Some TMJ disorders are often the result of other ailments in the body. One such oral health disorder, bruxism, could be causing your teeth to grind and put unnecessary pressure on your jaw, which in turn results in a TMJ disorder.
– To help protect your jaw, avoid all unpleasant habits for your jaw, such as biting your nails, chewing gum, and trying to chew through overly tough or hard foods such as steak.
– There are plenty of different treatment methods to help cope with the pain and discomfort of a TMJ disorder. Treatment methods including relaxing music, meditation, yoga, biofeedback, and stress balls. Speak with your dentist to find an effective method to alleviate stress and jaw pressure from your mouth.
– If you are suffering from any pain related to a TMJ disorder, heat packs can be used as effective pain relievers. Alternatively, if you are suffering from any swelling or inflammation, ice packs can be used.
