When to See a Family Dentist

Family dentists are general dentistry professionals who have undergone training to learn how to treat patients of different ages, ranging from school-aged children to the elderly. They are responsible for helping all patients maintain good oral health through a number of options, including providing regular check-up appointments and preventive measures, as well as addressing warning signs that may indicate a problem.

While many people believe at-home oral hygiene is enough to maintain good oral health, the truth is, the help of a dentist is actually required. In the case of family dentists, parents can visit the same practice that their children do, making for convenient care. Keep reading to find out more!

When should I see a family dentist?

Outlined below are a few times when it is a good idea to see a family dentist.

When routine oral health care is needed

A family dentist should be seen when individuals are in need of regular oral health care. Both children and adults can visit a family dentist for check-up appointments, which include a teeth cleaning, an examination, x-rays and fluoride applications. Each of the four parts that make up check-ups is essential for obtaining and maintaining good oral health.

Patients who have not undergone a regular check-up in a while should definitely visit a family dentist. It is recommended to maintain these appointments twice a year or every six months.

When wanting preventive measures

Patients who want preventive measures taken for their gums and teeth can visit a family dentist, regardless of age. Both adults and children can undergo preventive dental care, which can be helpful in keeping cavities or infections at bay. Common preventive family dentist care includes dental sealant placement, fluoride application and deep dental cleanings.

When there are abnormalities or imperfections

When patients notice any abnormalities or imperfections in their teeth or their children's teeth then it is necessary to visit a family dentist. In general, the teeth are supposed to appear a shade of white, all in line with one another. If there are any black, grey or brown marks on the teeth then it is necessary to undergo an evaluation. As far as the gums, they are supposed to appear firm and pink. Common abnormalities include white or yellow patches, bleeding and swelling, all of which are signs that there is an existing problem.

As far as imperfections go, these may be cosmetic; however, sometimes, they may require restorative measures. For example, severe staining or discoloration is a cosmetic problem, but a family dentist may be able to use restorative measures to address it.
